Volcán Lanín — Vía Normal Argentina
A 2-3 day climb via the Normal Argentine Route, starting at the Río Turbio ranger station in Parque Nacional Lanín. Climbs through araucaria and lenga forest to Refugio RIM (2,400 m) and Refugio CAJA (2,600 m), then on to the summit (3,747 m) via the "fishbone" section, using ice axe and crampons on the glaciated stretches. Grade 3 (IFAS) — a mountain guide is recommended without prior high-altitude experience.
Lanín is a dormant volcano with an almost perfect cone, visible from much of northern Patagonia, and climbing it via the Normal Argentine Route is one of Argentine mountaineering's classic objectives — demanding but not technical climbing, just solid ice-axe and crampon skills. Access is via Provincial Route 60 from Junín de los Andes, following the Río Malleo into the park, where steppe gives way to araucaria forest on the way to the Río Turbio ranger station — a Gendarmería post, park rangers, and an information center, and the mandatory starting point.
From the parking area, a well-marked trail crosses lenga forest to the base of the volcano, where trail markers signal the start of the "fishbone" — the route's signature stretch, a ridge of volcanic rock climbed steadily. After about 4 hours you reach Refugio RIM (2,400 m), and one more hour to Refugio CAJA (2,600 m), where most parties spend the night before the final push.
Summit day is 6 to 7 hours of slow, steady walking from CAJA, over snow and ice on the upper sections — ice axe and crampons are essential here, and it's worth starting before dawn to take advantage of firm snow before it softens in the afternoon sun. The summit (3,747 m) rewards with views that, on clear days, reach Lago Huechulafquen, Volcán Villarrica across the border in Chile, and a wide stretch of the Andes.
The descent follows the same route, with extra care on the softened afternoon snow. Given the exposure and total elevation gain (2,200 m from the parking area), this is an outing only for those with prior high-mountain experience with crampons and an ice axe — or climbing with a licensed guide, strongly recommended for a first attempt.
