Refugio Frey por el Filo del Catedral
A loop that combines the Cerro Catedral chairlift with a hike along the ridge of the mountain down to Refugio Frey, returning via the classic Arroyo Van Titter trail to the base. Rocky, exposed terrain on the ridge; good weather only.
This loop is the fastest — and most exposed — way to reach Refugio Frey: instead of hiking up from the base, you ride the Séxtuple and Lynch chairlifts of Catedral Alta Patagonia up to roughly 1,800 m, then continue on foot along the mountain's ridge heading south. The chairlifts run on a limited seasonal schedule (typically 9 am to 5 pm), so it's worth confirming they're operating before heading up.
From Refugio Lynch the trail climbs a rocky, uneven crest marked with red paint blazes to the highest point of the loop (~1,940 m), with direct views into the Arroyo Rucaco valley. This is a medium-to-high difficulty stretch: loose terrain, large boulders, and full wind exposure with no forest cover. At a signposted fork, keep left to continue toward Frey — the other branch drops back down to the base by a different route.
Past the fork the trail loses altitude down to Laguna Schmoll, the upper step of the Frey amphitheater, then descends further to Laguna Toncek, where Refugio Frey (1,700 m) appears, ringed by the granite spires that have made the area famous among climbers worldwide. It's a good spot to stop for a hot meal before the final stretch.
From the refuge, the descent follows the classic Arroyo Van Titter trail — the same one used by hikers going straight to Frey from the base — down to the Cerro Catedral parking lot. All told, between the ridge section and the Van Titter descent, it's about 3 to 3.5 hours of walking from Lynch to Frey, plus another 2 to 3 hours down to the base.
If you'd rather not sort out the chairlift logistics and ridge route-finding on your own, several Bariloche trekking agencies run this as a guided full-day excursion — worth considering if it's your first time in the area or your group has no prior experience on exposed high-mountain terrain.
