Cumbre Catedral Norte
A high-mountain ascent from the base of Cerro Catedral to Cumbre Catedral Norte (~2,141 m), continuing past Refugio Frey and Laguna Schmoll over exposed rocky terrain. A long, technical day, only for those already familiar with the Frey circuit and experienced in high-mountain travel.
Cumbre Catedral Norte is the natural continuation, for those already familiar with the Frey circuit, of Bariloche's most classic route. It shares the first 10 kilometers with the trail to Refugio Frey: the same coihue forest, the Arroyo Van Titter valley, and the Cancha de Fútbol clearing, before reaching the refuge on the shore of Laguna Toncek (1,700 m). Many split the outing over two days, spending the night at Frey before tackling the upper section.
Past the refuge, the trail climbs to Laguna Schmoll and from there leaves the amphitheater of granite spires behind for good, climbing the ridge toward the Catedral massif proper. The terrain changes completely: exposed rock, steep pitches, and stretches of scrambling where you'll want your hands free. The near-total absence of vegetation at this altitude leaves hikers fully exposed to the Patagonian wind, which can be intense on the ridge even on days that look calm from town.
Cumbre Catedral Norte (roughly 2,141 m — sources vary depending on whether they're measuring this secondary summit or the main Catedral massif) crowns the route with a panorama that takes in Lago Nahuel Huapi, the Tronador massif to the west, and, on clear days, a good stretch of the border range. There's no water available past Laguna Schmoll, so carry everything you'll need for the final stretch and the return.
The descent follows the same route. Given the total length of the day and the exposure of the upper section, it's worth setting out very early, packing warm layers even if the day starts clear, and assessing conditions at Schmoll before continuing — in strong wind or bad weather, the Frey circuit alone is already an excellent outing and there's no need to push for the summit.
Because this is a long day on high-mountain terrain that's unmarked past Schmoll, it's worth going with someone who already knows the ridge or hiring a local mountain guide — Club Andino Bariloche and several agencies in town run this climb as a full-day excursion or combined with an overnight at Refugio Frey.
